 I'm excited to share with you 15 fascinating facts about this beloved story. 

1. The original story of 101 Dalmatians was written by Dodie Smith in 1956. The book was a huge success and has since been translated into over 30 languages.

2. The character of Cruella de Vil was inspired by the Hungarian Countess Clara Elizabeth Bathory, who was known for her cruelty and love of furs.

3. The name “Dalmatian” comes from the breed's origin in Dalmatia, a region in present-day Croatia. The breed was originally used as a guard dog and companion.

4. In 1961, Walt Disney Productions acquired the rights to adapt “101 Dalmatians” into an animated movie. The movie was released in 1961 and was a hit.

5. The iconic song “Cruella de Vil” from the cartoon was written by Mel Levene, who also wrote songs for other classic Disney cartoons such as “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Feed the Birds”.

6. The character of Pongo was originally intended to be a minor character in the story. However, Dodie Smith's daughter Lucy convinced her to make him the main character.

7. Perdita's name comes from a Latin word meaning “lost,” which is appropriate given her predicament in the story.
